PLYMOUTH – Bourne attorney Jay McMahon formally launched his candidacy Tuesday for the Plymouth/Barnstable State Senate seat being vacated by fellow Republican Senator Vinny deMacedo.
“Having built a business in my hometown, raised a family here, and served in local law enforcement, I care deeply about our communities,” said McMahon during his announcement in Plymouth.
“We live in a very special area of Massachusetts. Our communities face many unique issues that will require a strong leadership ready to go on day one,” he said.
In addition to the announcement in Plymouth, McMahon made similar announcements in Falmouth and Bourne.
“Beacon Hill is threatening another large gas tax. There are talks about turning over the bridges to the Commonwealth. And we are still being hit hard by the opioid epidemic. It is going to take a strong common-sense voice in the Senate to ensure that our area interests are protected. I will be the work horse that gets the job done,” said McMahon.
McMahon was the Republican nominee for attorney general in Massachusetts last year, losing to incumbent Maura Healey.
He has served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard and on the Bourne Financial Development Corporation.
McMahon is the only announced Republican so far in the race.
Five Democrats have said they will run, including Jack Stanton of Sandwich, Sue Moran of Falmouth, John Mahoney of Plymouth, Thomas Moakley of Falmouth and Becky Coletta of Pembroke.
The district includes Sandwich, Falmouth, Bourne, Plymouth, Pembroke and Kingston.
DeMacedo is stepping down to take a job at Bridgewater State University.
