WOODS HOLE – The Steamship Authority says it has fixed a mechanical problem that forced the cancellation of two early morning Martha’s Vineyard trips Thursday.
The M/V Island Home was taken out of service after an issue once again arose with the vessel’s emergency generator. A similar problem caused the vessel to be sidelined for part of the day on Wednesday.
“The chief engineer on board the M/V Island Home identified a malfunction in the starter for the vessel’s emergency generator, likely caused by the repeated attempts to start the generator Wednesday following the malfunction in the relay,” said Sean Driscoll, the Communications Director for the Steamship Authority. “The starter needed to be replaced, necessitating the cancelation of the 6 a.m. departure from Woods Hole and the 7 a.m. departure from Vineyard Haven.”
The Island Home returned to service for its regularly scheduled 8:15 a.m. trip after repairs were completed.
The boat line has been plagued by equipment malfunctions in recent months, leading to the cancellation of hundreds of ferries. The Steamship Authority’s Board of Governors voted last week to hire a Seattle-based consulting firm to conduct a top-to-bottom review of their operations.
