MEMA Encourages Residents and Visitors to Know Hurricane Evacuation Zones

MEMA Evacuation ZonesFRAMINGHAM – The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency is stressing hurricane preparedness and is encouraging residents and visitors in coastal communities to know the evacuation zones.

Individuals who live, work or vacation in a hurricane evacuation zone may be asked or ordered to leave prior to a tropical storm or hurricane hitting the region.

“Evacuations in advance of a hurricane or tropical storm making landfall may be necessary due to the danger and threat of storm surge,” said Kurt Schwartz, the director of MEMA. “Storm surge is often the greatest threat to life and property from a hurricane or tropical storm.”

There are two hurricane evacuation zones on the Cape and Islands. Zone A includes areas that are most at risk of flooding and will flood first during tropical storms and less powerful hurricanes. Zone B includes areas that are at risk of flooding during more powerful storms.

Detailed evacuation zone maps for coastal communities in the state can be found here.

An interactive map of the hurricane evacuation zones can be found below. Zone A, the higher risk zone, is highlighted in red and Zone B areas are in yellow.
