State Provides More Safety Tips as Emergency Preparedness Month Continues

FRAMINGHAM – As Emergency Preparedness Month continues in Massachusetts and across the country, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is working to keep the public informed of critical safety tips and preparations for emergencies.

MEMA has been promoting weekly themes with four key preparedness messages throughout the month. Last week’s theme was titled Be Informed and Receive Emergency Alerts. This week, the agency is promoting emergency preparedness with Plan for Emergencies and Disasters.

“Obviously we’re in the middle of peak hurricane season, as we’re seeing, so it’s really a good time for people to think about those emergency plans that they may need themselves, whether it be for a hurricane or any other emergency,” MEMA Spokesman Christopher Besse explains.

“This week’s theme is really around having an emergency plan for yourself and your family.”

MEMA is highly encouraging families to create or update their disaster plans for Prepare for Emergencies week. The agency says that families should establish meeting locations, develop and update their emergency contact plans, plan out how to evacuate their home and location, develop a plan to shelter in place, prepare finances for potential emergencies, and consider everyone’s needs.

Besse says that despite September being Emergency Preparedness Month, MEMA is trying to encourage a culture of preparedness on a year-round basis.

“We think about the hazards we see here in New England it’s everything from hurricanes this time of year to tornados in the summer to winter and coastal storms like we saw in March. There’s really events that happen year-round that make the need to prepare important,” said Besse.

“What that really means is the things you may need to do during an emergency. Depending on the situation you may be asked to evacuate your home or you may be asked to shelter in-place and hunker down. We have some tips on our website and on our social media about how people can do that.”

Next week, MEMA will be providing information on how to build an effective and reliable emergency kit for the Build and Emergency Kit theme of the week.
