Memorial Services Set for Falmouth Crash Victim

FALMOUTH – A wake is planned Monday for one of the Falmouth High School students killed last week in a car crash.

Visitation hours for James Lavin will be held at the Chapman, Cole, and Gleason funeral home in Falmouth from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral mass is planned for Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church in Falmouth

Lavin and his friend Owen Higgins were both killed after their car crashed into a tree on Thomas Landers Road Thursday night.

Lavin, the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. Higgins was medflighted to Rhode Island and died the next day at Hasbro Children’s Hospital with his family at his side.

The two were coming back from hockey practice Thursday night when their car left the road way and crashed into the tree near Geggatt road.

A makeshift memorial has been set up at the crash site.

Lavin and Higgins, both 17, played for the Falmouth High School football and hockey teams.

A Go Fund Me page had raised nearly $50,000 as of Monday morning to help pay for funeral expenses and to establish a scholarship in Lavin’s memory. A Go Fund Me page in Higgins’ honor has raised more than $40,000.

Lavin is survived by his mother, father, and three siblings.

Falmouth police chief Ed Dunne said officials have not determined a cause of the crash. The State Police Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation.
