Organizers rally in Hyannis following the Men’s March last May.

HYANNIS – Men from the community will come together this Sunday and march through Hyannis to end violence against women.

The 2nd Annual Men’s March will be held at 12:30 p.m. at The Cape Cod Synagogue. The event is a collaboration between the ManKind Project, Cape and Islands Community, Independence House and the NO More Campaign.

A pre-march rally will take place with guest speakers before the march through the Hyannis Main Street District.

The march will return to the synagogue for refreshments.

The purpose of the march is to bring the community together with a common goal of being part of the solution to end domestic and sexual violence against women.

“I know men have been part of the solution but we want to bring a lot of men together who feel the same way, and the vast majority of men feel that way but might not know how to go about doing anything,” said Brian Renard, the co-coordinator or the ManKind Project, Cape and Islands Community. “The march is a way to get us all together just to get out in the public that there are men who abhor this behavior and want to be part of the solution.”

Women and children are also encouraged to attend the march.

The guest speakers at the event include Rabbi David Freelund of Cape Cod Synagogue, Criag Norberg-Bohm, the coordinator of the White Ribbon Day Campaign, representatives from the Mentors in Violence Prevention programs at Cape Cod high schools, Director of Marketing and Communication for the ManKind Project Boysen Hodgson and Lysetta Hurge Putnam, the executive director of Independence House.

Renard said the inaugural march last year had about 100 participants and that he is hoping this year’s event can at least double that number.

Follow up round table panel discussions that will be held throughout the rest of the year will also be outlined at the march.

The first of the round table discussions is scheduled for June 7.

“In those round tables we are going to see how we can carry this forward in other ways besides the march,” Renard said.

There is a suggested donation of $20. It will be used to cover the costs of the event with any excess funds going to Independence House, which provides programs for women and families that have been effected by domestic or sexual violence.
