BARNSTABLE – An Osterville resident has been selected as the 2016 Mercy Otis Warren Cape Cod Woman of the Year.

The selection committee unanimously selected Ann Williams, 86, who currently serves on the boards of the Cape Cod Community College Foundation and the YMCA Cape Cod, along with serving on Contributions Committee of the Marion Jordan Trust.

Williams also works with special needs students once a week, is active in the Osterville Business and Professional Association.

The Mercy Otis Warren Cape Cod Woman of the Year award, which was established in 2002, annually recognizes a woman on the Cape who exemplifies leadership in the community and has made significant contributions to the arts, education, business, community involvement and embraces the ideals of patriotism.

Williams, her husband and their seven children moved to Barnstable full-time in 1967. She joined the town’s finance committee and became the town’s representative on the organizing committee of the Cape Cod Regional Technical High School in Harwich. She joined the board of Cape Cod Tech a year after it opened and still serves on its executive committee.

Trained as a biologist, she became the first Director of Community Affairs at Cape Cod Hospital.

Williams was also a liaison to the Cape Cod Hospital’s Woman’s Auxiliary, a group of independent branches which offer financial support to hospital capital projects.

She is also being recognized for her volunteer work with the Rotary becoming president of the Osterville Rotary and then District Governor for the South Shore, Cape and Islands, Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. As a Rotarian, Williams travels the world in support of childhood immunization and pure water.

Williams will be presented with the award by last year’s winner Michelle DeSilva on June 6 at 7 p.m. as part of the Tales of Cape Cod program at the Olde Colonial Courthouse in Barnstable Village.
