WELLFLEET – Lieutenant Michael Hurley has been named as the new chief of the Wellfleet Police Department.
The town’s select board chose the 24-year veteran of the department last week.
Hurley will take over for Chief Ronald Fisette, who will retire in February after leading the department since 2010.
“We’ve been on this journey together for the past 10 years; he’s been chief, I’ve been the lieutenant,” Hurley said.
“We both have the same philosophy with policing and communities.”
As a member of the community, Hurley aims to continue to meet the needs of Wellfleet’s citizens in his new role.
“Each community is different one by one,” he said.
“I think we, in law enforcement and public safety, need to listen to the needs, which continuously change. Hopefully, we adapt with the changes.”
Specifically, Hurley will look to continue the fight against the opioid crisis and monitor the growth of marijuana shops.
Hurley will become the acting chief of the department on November 1.
