Missing Kayaker Found Safe After Search in Kingston

coast guard helicopterPLYMOUTH – A missing kayaker was found safe early Tuesday morning in Kingston following an extensive overnight search.

Michael Rafferty, 43, of Kingston, was reported missing by his girlfriend Monday night when he failed to return from a kayak trip in the Jones River.

The U.S. Coast Guard said Rafferty was located just before 5:30 a.m. He told officials he got stuck up-river when the tide went out last night and had to wait for the morning high tide.

The search through the overnight included a helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod, State Police and harbormasters from Kingston, Plymouth and Duxbury.

Rafferty told the Coast Guard that he could he see the rescue helicopters through the overnight, but was unable to signal them.
