Mixed-Use Development Proposed for Sandwich

SANDWICH – A proposal for a mixed-use development in Forestdale was presented to Sandwich Selectmen last week.

The Ruhan and Stinson Realty Group development, which would be located on an 18-acre parcel of land off Route 130, would include retail space and housing, along with energy and wastewater treatment infrastructure.

“What is now going to be called Sandwich Green is not just a housing proposal,” said Jonathan Fitch, the project attorney.

“You will hear about clean water, clean energy, wastewater, housing, economic development, jobs, sustainability, the town’s Housing Production Plan and the town’s Local Comprehensive Plan.”

Fitch said since 2009 the town’s affordable housing percentage has only increased from 3.6 to 3.8 percent.

“There hasn’t been a whole lot of progress in that department,” he said.

The developers received a mostly supportive response from Selectmen who allowed them to take the proposal to the planning board.

The developers are looking for support for a Local Initiative Petition. The state incentive program provides technical support through LIP’s to communities and developers who partner to create affordable housing options.

The development would get electricity from an energy-efficient community microgrid. It would include solar and battery storage, along with a water cleaning and wastewater treatment system.
