Solitary fisherman on Cape Cod at sunriseThe state Department of Fish and Game has debuted a mobile fishing licensing system just in time for summer. The new system allows people to purchase and display their fishing license using only a smart phone.

But this weekend, anglers do not need a license because it is Free Fishing Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, an opportunity particularly for people who have never tried fishing to sample the sport without a fee.

Department of Fish and Game Commissioner Mary Griffin said the new MassFishHunt licesning system debuted last week and more than 1,000 people have already purchased fishing licenses with their phones. The system was developed to increase the convenience of the licensing system.

“Outdoor sporting may be a timeless hobby, but these modern updates offer convenience and ease for every angler,” Griffin said.

Fishing license revenues support various program efforts at the Department of Fish and Game and the Division of Marine Fisheries. Saltwater permit sales support fisheries research, management and public access projects for anglers.

Freshwater fishing license purchases support freshwater fish management programs, conservation of fishing areas, and outdoor skills and education programs.
