CHATHAM – The latest project from The Family Panty of Cape Cod will bring healthy foods on the road to those in need beginning this week.

The first run of the new Mobile Food Pantry will take place Wednesday at the Chatham Council on Aging 193 Stoney Hill Road, from noon until 2 p.m.

According to Family Pantry Program Manager Pat Brophy, the travelling truck will make that stop on the third Wednesday of each month, and its schedule will expand to other Lower Cape towns’ Councils on Aging.

He said the need for such a vehicle came from Family Pantry members who don’t have their own transportation to the organization’s Harwich location.

“Some are driven by other folks, some take the CCDART busses when they are available, but there’s a lot who have difficulty getting here.”

Food will be distributed on a choice basis, meaning patrons will fill out a shopping list which will detail the specific items to be brought to them at their respective Council on Aging.

The selections will include dry good items, meat, produce, seafood, bakery and dairy, in addition to seasonal items.

Brophy said the Family Panty intends on expanding the service to more specific family-based locations, should the Councils on Aging project prove successful.
