BARNSTABLE – A new feature at Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable will help increase access to the sand for those with mobility issues.

A mobility mat was installed before Memorial Day and provides users a steady surface to roll on between the boardwalk and the water.

Sandy Neck Beach Park Manager Nina Coleman said at a recent dedication ceremony that the mat opens the beach up to a wider array of individuals and families.

“It’s a really great opportunity at Sandy Neck,” she said. “We have the beach wheelchairs, off-road beach and a lot of land to share, but this gets that last group of people that are having trouble navigating.”

The project was sponsored by the Disability Commission.
