YARMOUTH – Students from Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School and Cape Cod Academy collaborated with some of the area’s seniors Saturday at the first Intergenerational Model U.N.
According to Yarmouth Senior Services Director Kathi Bailey, the event at the Yarmouth Senior Center was the first of its kind in the nation.
“The point is to introduce intergenerational dialogue, inclusion and diversity,” she said. “Often, you get in the great divide about resources: the schools or the young people, and we wanted to do more about that because the community is for all ages.”
The topic of clean water was the focus of the event, in which students and seniors paired around and spoke on account of each of the world’s nations.
The event was the first model U.N. the school system experienced in “quite a few years,” according to Bailey.
She said that the exercise is something that tends to only be available to school systems with higher incomes.
Bailey said the topic was particularly impactful, considering the Cape’s region-wide issues with nitrification in groundwater in recent years.
Among the guest speakers were Professor Emeritus from Tufts University and Human Rights advocate John S. Gibson and Wastewater Section Chief for the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Brian Dudley.
