Modernist Artist Exhibit to Open at Cahoon Museum

COTUIT – The Cahoon Museum of American Art in Cotuit will host a new exhibit beginning later this month displaying the work of a 20th Century modernist artist.

Herman Maril: The Strong Forms of Our Experience runs from August 17 through October 28.

The comprehensive selection of Maril works features nearly 90 pieces, including watercolors, drawings, prints and other paintings.

Maril was an early modernist painter whose subjects range from urban landscapes to coastal seascapes.

His work is nature-based, abstractly organized and simplified in form and content.

Maril’s pieces are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Smithsonian Museum and others.

A four-color catalog prepared by exhibit curator, Dr. Ann Prentice Wagner from the Arkansas Art Center, will accompany the exhibit and be available for purchase.

An opening reception, which is free and open to the public, will be held Saturday, August 18 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and will allow guests an opportunity to discuss the exhibit with Wagner and the artist’s son, David Maril.
