Monomoy’s Burkhead Receives Principal of the Year Award

HYANNIS – Monomoy Regional High School Principal William Burkhead was honored yesterday in Hyannis as the Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators’ Association High School Principal of the Year.

The award is presented to administrators who have succeeded in providing high-quality learning opportunities for students, along with making contributions to their profession.

Burkhead joined Monomoy from Normandin Middle School in New Bedford as the first principal of the district’s new regional high school.

Association president Mark Wood says Burkhead has accomplished a lot at Monomoy in such a short amount of time.

“His movement to a positive school culture, understanding the importance of collaboration and empowering students to take an active role in their education has made William Burkhead an excellent choice to be the recipient of the Bertrand H. Holland Award for the High School Principal of the Year,” Wood said.

Wood also quoted a Monomoy student describing the reasons why Burkhead has been successful.

“He honors the value of each and every person in the building,” he said. “He has a 620 program that is centered upon the idea that every student at Monomoy is important.”

Wood said Burkhead also created a culture that encourages new ideas and programs.

“In our conversation, I was impressed with the energy and the pride in which he spoke and he talked about his school, but mostly about his students,” Wood said.

Burkhead accepted the award on behalf of the teachers, staff, students and district communities.

“At Monomoy Regional High School WE have created an extremely positive culture consisting of high expectations, trust, risk taking, teamwork and our relentless pursuit of moving our school from good to great,” Burkhead said.

The process to receive the award including answering several essay questions about the school and the three finalists were all interviewed in person.
