Moped Safety on Vineyard A Focus After Crash in Chilmark

ER medical symbolTISBURY – Officials on Martha’s Vineyard are reminding visitors and residents alike of the dangers of mopeds.

A 22-year-old man was killed on July 1st when he lost control of his moped in Chilmark and collided with a pickup truck.

Oak Bluffs Police Chief Eric Blake said conditions on the Vineyard roadways can create hazardous situations and one slip can cause serious harm.

He said visitors choosing to use mopeds should be aware of the Vineyard’s narrow and windy roads, particularly up-island.

Blake also said the influx of pedestrians this time of year creates an additional hazard.

The Vineyard has seen numerous incidents of moped-related injuries and deaths over the years.

Listing common safety hazards, Blake said moped operators should never wear flip flops while driving. During the interview, he looked out the window and saw a moped go by and the woman riding in the back was drinking an ice coffee. Another hazard, he said.
