BOSTON – Several farms in Southeastern Massachusetts have received grant funding from the Baker Administration for the installation of water conservation projects.
In response to the drought last year, the Department of Agricultural Resources’ Agricultural Environmental Enhancement Program provided $250,000 statewide with more than $75,000 going to six farms in Carver, East Falmouth, Lakeville and Plymouth.
The grants will help fund projects that include automatic irrigation systems and tailwater recovery for cranberry operations, drip irrigation and wells, along with water re-use projects.
“Water conservation is an important part of a successful farming operation, especially following last year’s rain conditions across the Commonwealth,” said Governor Charlie Baker in a release. “The water conservation grants we are providing today will help Massachusetts farms withstand future dry weather conditions, and continue to be successful for generations to come.”
Three farms in Carver received grants, including $10,000 to Edgewood Bogs, $20,000 to S.K. Wainio Bogs and $14,000 to Weston Bros. Cranberries.
Dale Tree Movers & Tree Farm in East Falmouth was awarded $3,350.
A $12,500 grant was awarded to Betty’s Neck Farm in Lakeville and E.J. Pontiff Cranberries in Plymouth will receive $15,725.
“The continued support of the AEEP by the Baker-Polito Administration represents their commitment to the long-term viability of agriculture in the Commonwealth, and our cranberry growers are appreciative for that investment,” said Brian Wick, the executive director of the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers’ Association.
