EDGARTOWN – The Michigan man being held by security forces in Russia on spying charges has ties to Martha’s Vineyard.

According to the MV Times, Paul Whelan, 48, has a sister, Elizabeth Whelan, who is an artist on the Island.

Elizabeth declined to comment on her brother’s plight, but she did claim his innocence on social media.

His brother David Whelan made television appearances also declaring his brother’s innocence.

Michael Whelan, a security executive at Borg Warner, was in Moscow for a wedding, according to his family. He was arrested on Friday and met with the U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Huntsman on Wednesday.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, commenting from Brazil, said the U.S. continues to demand answers with regard to Whelan’s detention.
