Mother-Daughter Duo Collaborate to Present Cape Conservatory Dances

WEST BARNSTABLE – Following a well-received presentation of the ballet, The Legend of Witch, Moll Dyer, Cape Conservatory Artistic Director & Choreographer Jane Caputo is creating a another ballet that the Conservatory Youth Ballet will debut this month.

The premiere performance of Moonlight Sonata (In the 21st Century) is set to Beethoven’s “Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor,” popularly known as the “Moonlight Sonata.”

“I’ve loved the Sonata since I was a child; I can even remember the first time I heard it,” explained Caputo.

“When I listen to the music, I visualize the dance. I am profoundly excited to present my vision, my interpretation of the music through dance to a live audience.”

The ballet is based in classical technique with modern approaches in phrasing and form. As the two styles of dance merge throughout the sonata, Caputo weaves references to the moon: in the first movement, the New Moon; the second movement, the Full Moon; and in the final movement, the steps and formations suggest an Eclipse.

While the focus of the production is on the premiere of Moonlight Sonata (In the 21st Century), Caputo’s daughter Lindsay, who oversees the dance program at the Conservatory’s Falmouth campus, will also debut a piece she choreographed entitled Wonderland, based on Alice in Wonderland.

The performance also includes solo variations from Marius Petipa’s classic works, The Sleeping Beauty, La Bayadare, Raymonda and Don Quixote, featuring pre-professional and professional dancers, as well as charming and engaging performances by the Conservatory’s youngest ballet students.

The Cape Conservatory will present Moonlight Sonata (In the 21st Century) on Sunday, June 23 at 2:00 p.m. at the Tilden Arts Center of Cape Cod Community College. Admission is $10 for adults; students attend free of charge.
