BARNSTABLE – State Police operating out of the Yarmouth barracks will be conducting a public awareness exercise in regards to the Move Over Law on Route 6 in Barnstable today.
The initiative will focus on improving awareness and compliance of drivers moving over to the left lane when there are emergency vehicles pulled over on the right side of the highway, or vice versa.
The exercise will be in eastbound lanes of Route 6 between Exits 6 and 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 12.
State police will activate the message boards on the highway to make motorists away of the exercise.
According to a police statement on the exercise, the reason for the focus on Route 6 is that it is a two-lane limited axis highway. There are large sections of Route 6 that have no breakdown lane and only a narrow soft shoulder for emergency stopping.
Due to the age and design of the roadway, it can be extremely dangerous for disabled vehicles, highway maintenance vehicles and emergency vehicles.
Troopers will focus on vehicles traveling on Route 6 approaching stationary emergency vehicles. When police see infractions, troopers will have violators signaled into the Route 6 eastbound rest area in Barnstable to take corrective action.
Troopers will be handing out pamphlets about the Move Over Law.
