CENTERVILLE – A sudden influx of cats will make this weekend’s Massachusetts Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-Cape Cod Super Bowl Sunday Polar Plunge fundraiser even more important for the organization.
A Fall River man recently called the organization because he could no longer care for the 75 cats living in his apartment.
The MSPCA’s Centerville facility is currently caring for 25 of those cats – two of which are pregnant.
“They are now in our care and we are treating them for some minor medical issues and then we hope to send them home, of course, after they are spayed and neutered,” said Mary Sarah Fairweather, the executive director of the MSPCA-Cape Cod.
Fairweather said taking in the animals has added unforeseen costs for the Centerville shelter.
“We send all of our cats, dogs and rabbits home spayed and neutered and there is a cost associated with that,” Fairweather said. “We don’t have a spay/neuter clinic within our current facility – we will in our new facility – so we outsource all of that and that costs a lot of money.”
The final few cats were taken out of the apartment this week.
“They really are all very, very socialized,” Fairweather said. “Very few of them seemed scared.”
Fairweather said the owner did love the animals and cared for them.
The polar plunge is Sunday at Craigville Beach in Centerville at noon.
