Music, Agriculture and Food Highlight 2018 Barnstable County Fair

EAST FALMOUTH  – The 174th edition of the Barnstable County Fair is rolling along in East Falmouth this week.

The first two days featured sunny, warm weather and big crowds taking in the food, music and agricultural exhibits.

The fair opened with a bang on Monday with rising country music star Jordan Davis and continued on Tuesday with singer Jenny Tolman.

One of the ground acts getting a lot of attention is the HKS Clydesdales horses.

Four of the majestic animals are on display with owner Phil Anderson.

“They are probably some of the most quiet and gentle horses you’ll ever meet. Very east to work around, good with people,” said Anderson.

He and his wife have 8 Clydesdales in total and brought 4 to the fair this year.

“Three-quarters of my horses all came from Canada. Canada is a big breeder of Clydesdales. We try to match size, personality and color,” said Anderson.

The demolition derby is expected to attract thousands Wednesday night in the main arena. The warm-up act took place on Tuesday with the team demo derby.

Fair Manager Wendy Brown said the agriculture exhibits are also an important part of the fair and that youth participation this year was high.

“I think kids have lost touch sometimes with agriculture, which is important to us,” Brown said.

“We are all involved in agriculture one way or another so it is a great learning experience for them.”

The fair’s scholarship program will award $40,000 in scholarships to local students on Thursday night.

The Barnstable County Agricultural Society held the first fair in 1844 at the County Courthouse in Barnstable Village.

After a short stint in Marstons Mills the fair was moved to its current location in 1973.

The fair continues the traditional agricultural heritage of the region with juried agriculture and livestock exhibits, 4-H programs and a petting zoo.

Ground attractions this year include the Beer Garden, iFlip Acrobatics, Tim Tegge and The Aristov Troupe and more.

Admission to the fair remains $12 and includes all shows. The gates are open from 4 to 11 p.m. through Thursday, noon to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, along with noon to 10 p.m. on Sunday.
