Nantucket Completes Sewer Extension Project

Nantucket – The Town of Nantucket recently completed construction of sewer lines for the Nantucket Harbor Shimmo & Plus Parcels Sewer Extension Project.

The Project provides municipal sewer connection to the Surfside Wastewater Treatment Facility for the Nantucket harbor Shimmo area and four Plus Parcel areas; Meadow View Drive, Green Meadows Drive, Bayberry Lane, and Tashama/Maclean Lean.

Engineer Steve Pedersen said “The project is based on the comprehensive wastewater management plan that was done, that established areas in need of sewer and recommendations for who was going to be connected to the Surfside Treatment plant.”

“One of the biggest driving factors on the need is the water protection district and the proximity that properties are to these and the Shimmo Plus areas…They’re all in some way impacting within the water protection districts.”

With only surface restoration, final paving and miscellaneous items remaining for completion this spring, fronted property owners have been notified that they should now be making arrangements to connect to the municipal sewer and decommission their existing on-site septic systems.

All properties in the Nantucket Harbor Shimmo area and some in the Plus Parcel areas require an on-lot residential grinder pump to connect to the municipal sewer.

Pedersen added “What we ultimately came up with was a hybrid system which is a combination of gravity sewers in some areas and the majority of areas are sewered by low pressure sewers which developed the need for the grinder pumps.”
