NANTUCKET – Nantucket Cottage Hospital has added a new piece of technology aimed at improving breast cancer screening.

Three-dimensional mammography is now available at the island hospital, which officials say can provide patients with enhanced breast cancer detection. The new unit will be used in addition to traditional two-dimensional mammography.

October is breast cancer awareness month. On October 28, the hospital will hold a mammogram registration drive for uninsured women over the age of 40.

Roughly 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer during their lifetime.
