Nantucket Historical Association Hosts Summer Program

nantucket harborNANTUCKET – The Nantucket Historical Association is inviting children and their caregivers to Hands-On History, a summer program full of crafts and activities for the whole family.

The program is offered daily in July and August from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Discovery Room at the Whaling Museum on Broad Street.

Hands-On History offers children and their companions the opportunity to create crafts inspired by artifacts in the NHA collection.

Each craft is designed to encourage participants to visit the Whaling Museum and explore the historical significance of the artifacts and souvenirs that Nantucketers carried home from their journeys aboard whaleships.

“Hands-on History inspires our youngest visitors to truly engage with the museum’s artifacts,” said NHA Director of Visitor Experience, Marjan Shirzad.

“The craft activities are designed to be fun and fascinating and we know that this year’s crafts will bring history alive to old and new audiences alike,” she said.

The summer daily schedule includes “Whale Mobiles and Whirligigs” on Monday, “Arrowheads and Coral Necklaces” on Tuesdays, “Scrimshaw” on Wednesdays, “Tea Cups and Dancing Masks” on Thursdays and “Lighthouses and Signal Flags” on Fridays.

Hands-On History is free for NHA members and free with regular museum admission.
