Maria Mitchell Association Celebrating 50th Anniversary of Moon Landing

NANTUCKET – With the 50-year anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association is celebrating with a variety of events and related exhibits.

July 20 marks the 50 year anniversary and MMA is kicking off that week with the Annual Red Tie Soiree at Sankaty Head Golf Club from 7:00 p.m. through 10:00 p.m. on July 15. The usually sold out event centers around the Apollo 11 mission with educational exhibits, displays and themed music by Perri Ross.

Special guest, Dr. Jennifer Levasseur, Curator of the Space History Department at the National Air and Space Museum will also speak at the event. Dr. Levasseur will also be giving a special public lecture on July 16 at the Unitarian Church at 7:00 p.m.

The Hinchman House Natural Science Museum will house exhibits and hold activities related to the moon landing starting the week of July 15.

On July 19, thanks to a generous grant from the Highland Street Foundation, all of the MMA Properties and related Apollo 11 programming will be free and open to the public. This will include a special, free Open Night at the Loines Observatory from 9:00 p.m. through 10:30 p.m. with an Apollo 11 theme.
