NANTUCKET – Governor Deval Patrick announced Friday the start of Nantucket Memorial Airports second phase to become the country’s first airport to entirely eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from its operations.
“This airport project is not only a win for the island of Nantucket, but for the Commonwealth as a whole as we continue the progress we’ve made to protect our environment,” said Patrick.
Phase two of the project will implement more than 25 energy conservation measures including solar panels and indoor and outdoor LED lights.
The airport will also retro commission major mechanical systems, build envelope improvements, provide a renewable source of hot water heating and boiler replacements.
The carbon neutral project is funded by local and federal sources including $805,000 in MassDOT Aeronautics funding .
The first phase of the project, which ended in the spring, collected data and Honeywell Building Solutions of Canton conducted an energy audit to identify possible improvements.
