NANTUCKET – Town officials on Nantucket say they’ve been able to limit the sewage discharge into Nantucket Harbor after the sewer system failed last week.
The town’s sewer department engineered a single-point discharge system on South Beach Street behind the Nantucket Yacht Club. Officials say that will prevent multiple outflow points and will give them a screening mechanism to prevent debris from entering the harbor.
Workers from the Robert B. Our company were flown to the island over the weekend by a National Guard helicopter because ferry service was cancelled due to the weather. Crews spent Sunday working on a division system aimed at stopping the discharge into the harbor.
Officials from the Department of Environmental Protection will be Nantucket this week to monitor the situation and work on clean-up plans with town officials.
Water and sewer use remains unaffected, but island residents are still being asked to limit their water use as much as they possibly can.
Parking and street restrictions are still in place downtown and will remain in effect until further notice.
The sewer line failed at the intersection of South Beach and Broad Streets.
Shellfishing is still closed down and will remain shuttered until the repairs are completed and state and local officials can evaluate the affected areas.
