Nantucket to Honor Lifesavers at Annual Event

NANTUCKET – Four individuals and Nantucket lifeguards will be recognized for their efforts during the island’s Lifesavers Recognition Day.

The Honorees include John McNally with the US Coast Guard and Nate Woodason from Nantucket Cottage Hospital, who helped with the response to the ferry crash in Hyannis Harbor in June.

Nantucket lifeguards will also be honored for their efforts on August 16 as Hurricane Gert passed south of the island. The strong surf and powerful rip currents resulted in 27 separate rescues.

Captain Brian Borgeson and First Mate Scott Riddle from the fishing vessel Absolute will also be recognized for rescuing three kayakers who were pushed out to sea off Wauwinet due to high winds in June.

The event, sponsored by The Egan Maritime Institute and Nantucket Cottage Hospital, is Monday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum.
