Nantucket Voters Reject $80 Million Sewer Project

NANTUCKET – A proposal to expand the Nantucket sewer system to Madaket failed at the ballot box yesterday.

Island voters rejected the $80 million spending plan, after residents approved the project earlier this year at town meeting. The proposal failed 779-472.

$3 million in funding to complete construction at the new elementary school passed, and voters also approved $700,000 to install a lined cell at the Nantucket landfill.

About 14 percent of voters cast ballots in yesterday’s special town election.
