National Grid Moratorium to Come to an End this Spring

HYANNIS – A nearly five-year moratorium on new gas service connections affecting residents of the Mid and Lower Cape will soon be coming to an end.

The restrictions have affected homeowners across Orleans, Harwich, Eastham, Chatham, Brewster, and Dennis since October of 2014 as National Grid sought to improve infrastructure in the region.

A $70 million effort to replace more than 18-miles of gas mains in the area is expected to wrap up early next year, allowing for expanded service.

National Grid Spokeman Robert Kievra said they have invested heavily on the effort.

“The moratorium came about because there was some infrastructure issues with our existing pipeline on the Cape,” he explained.

“Over the last three or four years we’ve spent upwards of $70 million to install new pipeline along a 18 mile stretch.”
