BOURNE – The National Marine Life Center is set to release 8 endangered sea turtles next week, 8 months after they were stranded on local beaches.
The Kemp’s ridley turtles were rescued by the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary during the 2016 stranding season and have been rehabilitated in Bourne since then. The rescued animals were treated for severe hypothermia.
Kemp’s ridleys are the most endangered sea turtle species, and the smallest.
The animals will be released back into the wild at Craigville Beach on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
“We are grateful to our dedicated volunteers who worked long hours to care for these turtles and the other endangered sea turtles in our hospital over the winter,” said Margot Madden, the Animal Care and Volunteer Manager at the National Marine Life Center
Rescuers have named the turtles Kingsbury, Peso, Zuma, Ziggy, Ewok, Owen, Riptide, and Stifler.
