WELLFLEET – The Cape Cod National Seashore is once again offering its Junior Lifeguard Program this summer.
The program, which is offered to boys and girls ages 13 to 17, promotes water safety and provides job specific training on Cape Cod.
Past junior lifeguards currently work for the National Seashore and several other Cape Cod towns.
About 16 applicants will be selected to participate in the free program and will be instructed in CPR/AED, first aid and lifeguard training.
The program starts on July 6 and runs through August 10 with classes being held Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Marconi Beach in Wellfleet.
Participants must be able to complete a one-third mile open ocean swim followed by a half mile run on the beach on the first day of the program.
Junior Lifeguards will also learn about prescribed fires, fire effects on the landscape and extinguisher use from National Park Service wildland firefighters.
Park rangers will teach regulation enforcement and participants will also learn marine rescues from US Coast Guard members.
Interested applicants must contact North District Head Lifeguard Gordon Miller by email at [email protected] and a pre-course interview will be scheduled.
