National Seashore Announces Plans for National Park Service Centennial

Cape Cod National Seashore Superintendent George Price announces "Health Parks, Healthy People" Initiative in Eastham Monday

EASTHAM – The Cape Cod National Seashore has announced a full line-up of events and activities to celebrate the 100th birthday of the National Park Service.

The theme of the centennial is “Find Your Park”, which is a challenge to Americans to seek out one of the more than 400 national park areas in the country to discover their stories.

Superintendent George Price said that although federal parks like Yosemite, Yellowstone and Grand Canyon are popular, the Cape Cod National Seashore is very unique.

“We have the beautiful, natural features of the beaches, we also have this incredible cultural story with the Native Americans, with the early settlers, with the event of tourism, with whaling, with fishing and with all the things that happened here at the Cape,” said Price.

The Seashore will celebrate the National Park Service with anniversary activities on August 25.

The Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham will host a Science Street Fair and Annual Science Symposium from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event showcases science and research at the seashore and will feature a meet and greet with seashore scientists and short presentations by researchers and scholars.

The Province Lands Visitor Center in Provincetown will host the Province Lands Centennial Celebration from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The afternoon event includes Wampanoag music and games, a scavenger hunt, birthday cake and slide show presentation.

The Centennial Celebration Family Concert will take place at 6 p.m. at the Salt Pond Visitor Center.

The Cape Symphony will perform pieces that reflect on nature and the value of parks and the natural world.

“I often recommend that people act as your own ranger,” said Price. “Take your visitors, guests and family out to some of these programs.”
