National Seashore Invites Volunteers to Pitch in During Weeklong Event

WELLFLEET – A weeklong event established in 1974 will bring local volunteers and members of the Barnstable County AmeriCorps Cape Cod (ACC) together to preserve the Cape Cod National Seashore and prepare it for another summer season.

The National Park Service’s (NPS) National Volunteer Week engages youth, professionals and volunteers to improve parks across the country.

Tasks such as painting, cleaning, sign repair and carpentry will be performed around the nearly 44,000 acres of the seashore between this Monday and Friday.

Park Planner Lauren McKean said she hopes those who care about the parks will come out for a while.

“We could use all the help we can get,” she said.

National Volunteer Week, which began 42 years ago, has grown exponentially across the nation, according to NPS officials.

This year, members of ACC will help in the maintenance and public outreach of the National Seashore, especially at the Province Lands Visitor Center in Provincetown, Highlands Center in Truro, Marconi Station Tie and seashore headquarters in Wellfleet, Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham and six ocean beaches within park boundaries.
