National Seashore Accepting Bids for Lease of Nauset Knoll Motor Lodge

ORLEANS – A big change could be coming to a staple of the Cape Cod National Seashore.

The National Park Service is now accepting bids for a ten-year lease of Nauset Knoll Motor Lodge in Orleans.

The motel is situated on the hill near the entrance to Nauset Beach, supplying the building, and those who occupy it, with an astonishing view in both directions.

“It’s a very unique setting with exceptionally expansive ocean views and it’s a really unique experience to those who stay there. It’s immediately adjacent to Nauset Beach in Orleans,” said Superintendent of the Cape Cod National Seashore Brian Carlstrom.

The Cape Cod National Seashore, under the umbrella of the National Park Service, will be hosting an open house at the motel on November 15 at 10:00 a.m.

The 12-unit motel has only been used as a motel, but the Seashore will consider other uses for it, including potential use as a restaurant, an education center, a commercial property, or for municipal services. The property also features a shed, garage, an office, and a decorative windmill that can be used for storage.

The Seashore asks potential lessees to outline their plans for the property, and advise that the lessee is responsible for insurance, utilities, and maintenance.

As the only lodging facility on the Cape Cod National Seashore, it’s likely that the next lessee will be running a motel, despite the noted interest the town has in the property.

“The Seashore has a Request for Proposals out to see what business interests would be willing to step forward and continue the operation. We really kind of opened it up to see where interest might lie in the market and we’re anxiously waiting to see what comes in. We hope to continue what’s currently there in some form going into the future,” Carlstrom said.

“I know the Town of Orleans is very interested in doing something there. We’ll see how things come together and what’s in the best interest of the park.”

With bids for the lease due by December 17, the Seashore estimates it should be accepting a lease January 31.
