National Seashore to Feature 50 Plein Air Artists to Celebrate NPS Centennial

beach artWELLFLEET – The Cape Cod National Seashore will join many other national parks throughout the nation this month in celebration of the National Park Service’s 100th birthday on August 25th.

On July 14th and 15th, 50 local artists will be invited to paint various scenes along the 43,607 acres of the seashore “en plein air,” from Provincetown to Eastham.

Visitors to the seashore on these days are encouraged to approach the artists and ask them about their work.

The national seashore has inspired artists for generations, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries. The artists of this period inspired the conservation movement, according to officials at the seashore.

A presentation regarding artists and the national parks will be given by Cape Cod National Seashore Chief of Interpretation Sue Moynihan on Thursday, July 14th at 1 p.m. inside the Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham.

The next day, Province Lands Visitor Center in Provincetown will host a speaker sharing the story of the dune shacks in the Outer Cape, beginning at 1 p.m.

The work of the plein air artists will be exhibited at the Addison Art Gallery in Orleans with a reception on July 16th from 5-7 p.m.

There are still some spots available for more artists. Those interested may contact the Addison Art Gallery at [email protected].
