Nauset Estuary Closed After Red Tide Outbreak

ORLEANS – State officials have closed the entire Nauset Estuary to shellfishing due to red tide.

The restriction went into place last week and is in effect until further notice.

In addition to the Nauset Estuary, the state has also implemented a closure in parts of Pleasant Bay Estuary. The closed areas include Meetinghouse Pond and Paw Wah Pond. Pochet Creek north of the no shellfishing sign is closed to the no shellfishing sign on Nauset Beach.

Lonnie’s Pond is only open to family permits from the launching ramp at the town landing and south to Herring run creek. Quanset Pond and Little Quanset Pond remain open to family permits only.

In Cape Cod Bay, portions of Rock Harbor, Namskaket, and Little Namskaket are closed.

Blooms of red tide can contaminate shellfish. Side effects from eating shellfish toxified by red tide include dizziness, nausea, respiratory problems, and muscular paralysis.
