Nautical Slow Zone Extended to Protect Right Whales

NANTUCKET – NOAA Fisheries has extended a voluntary vessel speed restriction zone located south of Nantucket.

The move aims to protect right whales in the area.

Originally set to expire early this year but has now twice been extended.

The zone is now in effect until March 5th.  Nineteen of the animals have been seen in the area, the whales are among the most endangered species on earth with a population of only about 400.

Mariners are asked to keeps speeds in the area to 10 knots or less.
