Orenda Wildlife Land Trust Adds Acreage

BARNSTABLE – Orenda Wildlife Land Trust has added nearly 30 acres to its portfolio across four sites in southeastern Massachusetts.

The land trust has added a 19-acre site of wooded uplands and marsh at the head of the Jones River Brook in Plympton; a 5-acre mix of wooded uplands with a red cedar grove, and a maple swamp with cattails in West Barnstable along Route 6A; a half-acre undeveloped lot that abuts a wetland in the middle of a developed neighborhood in Cotuit; and a nearly one-acre site that’s located next to two existing Orenda sanctuaries in West Barnstable.

These land donation deals were brokered by Mark Robinson, executive director of The Compact of Cape Cod Conservation Trusts, Inc.

“The best way to keep our waters clean is to protect the land surrounding it from being spoiled. Some of our most important wildlife habitats include the sensitive edge between upland forest and wetlands, where birds and animals have a mix of places to feed, nest and take cover in,” Robinson said.

Founded in 1986, Orenda Wildlife Land Trust’s mission is to preserve and protect open space for wildlife habitat, clean water and fresh air. They accomplish that through innovative public education programs, public policy forums, and advocacy.

Orenda owns or manages over 350 acres across 25 sanctuaries throughout Massachusetts.

Orenda means “protected place” in the language of indigenous peoples.
