Nearly 8,000 Barnstable Voters Inactivated After Municipal Census

BARNSTABLE–7,894 voters in Barnstable were inactivated by Town Clerk Ann Quirk last week after the annual Municipal Census, which is mandated by Massachusetts law.

Every municipality in the Commonwealth conducts this census to verify the information and addresses of registered voters. Further actions are taken if results are not initially received.

“We are required by law to try again and reach (voters),” Quirk explained, “and then we actually have to make them inactive.”

Voters are made inactive if their census is not received or if they move and do not notify their city or town.

“We have a 2020 election, and our first election is going to be in March for the Presidential preference. I’m just trying to get everything cleared up so that we’re ready for that election,” Quirk stated.

Barnstable residents can reach out to the Town Clerk’s Office for more information and to verify their voter status at 508-862-4044. Voters can also visit www.sec.state.ma.us.
