Net Metering Bill Causes Concern

solar panelsBOSTON – A net metering bill that is working its way through the state House of Representatives contains a provision that would require people with solar panels on their home to pay a minimum charge.

State Senator Dan Wolf said the bill has positive aspects in that it will create more capacity for people to build small, medium and large solar panels and sell that electricity back into the grid.

Wolf’s airline company Cape Air has a large solar panel installation on top of its hangar at the Barnstable Municipal Airport. Through that installation, Cape Air sells electricity back into the grid, so Cape Air would be affected by any provision.

Wolf said the minimum charge is controversial but it important for the upkeep of the electric grid.

“The devil is in the details,” Wolf said.

He said he believes once the senate takes up the bill, there will be amendments proposed that will address some of people’s concerns.
