NEW BEDFORD – The New Bedford Whaling Museum has unveiled its new $8 million learning center.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the Wattles Jacobs Education Center at the end of September and over 1,700 visitors toured the center during its first weekend.

The 20,000-square-foot learning center is the largest expansion of educational space in the 112-year history of the museum.

Classroom space in the museum has now quadrupled and the Research Library has been reunited with the Museum campus.

The center will enable the Museum to meet its expanding programming needs for the more 16,000 students who attend museum programs every year and is an educational tool for New Bedford students and fits together with the city’s educational goals.

The New Bedford Whaling Museum is the world’s most comprehensive museum devoted to the global story of whales and the history and culture of the South Coast.

The museum is on Johnny Cake Hill in New Bedford and is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
