New Bedford Whaling Museum Seeks New Guides

NEW BEDFORD – Do you have a passion for ocean based history? Then you may be in luck as officials with the New Bedford Whaling Museum are currently seeking volunteers and tour guides to help share their stories with diverse American audiences, and international visitors.

‘Docents’ are guides who work directly with school children, tour groups, specialists, and individual visitors, that play a vital role in the organization’s ability to enhance the understanding of human interaction with whales, the history of whaling and its impacts, whale ecology, marine mammal conservation, and the unique history of the region.

In addition, new guide training courses will also cover topics including the history of whaling, New Bedford history, whale biology and conservation, tour and teaching techniques, and more.

Anyone interested in sharing their time, knowledge, and enthusiasm is encouraged to register for an extensive 12-part docent training course. Those who are multi-lingual are also encouraged to apply.

To register for the program and to get training dates, you can visit whalingmuseum.org or contact Director of Education and Science Programs, Robert Rocha, at 508-717-6849.
