New Bedford Whaling Museum to Host Manhattan Short Film Festival

NEW BEDFORD — Nicknamed ‘The Whaling City’, it doesn’t take an Ivy League graduate to figure out what the City of New Bedford is best known for. However, the city by the sea provides a rich culture of theater and the arts as well.

The New Bedford Whaling Museum and Bristol Community College are partnering once again to bring the Manhattan Short Film Festival to New Bedford on September 28.

The night at the Whaling Museum kicks off with a reception followed by the film screenings. Join over 100,000 film enthusiasts from 300 cities across six continents to vote for Best Film and Best Actor. Participants will cast ballots using voting cards handed out upon entry.

The festival features nine films from a selection of 1,565 entries across 73 countries. These nine short films will be screened over 1,000 times between September 27 and October 7 in cities across the globe.

All nine films will be eligible for Oscar Award nominations, and represent a wide variety of genres including intimate dramas, comedies, spine-tingling tales, fast-paced animations, a World War II epic and even a film entirely shot underwater.

The films were shot in eight countries. Two were filmed in the United Kingdom, with Austria, New Zealand, Germany, Hungary, Kosovo, and the United States contributing one film each.

The Manhattan Short final nine are Lacrimosa (Austria), Fauve (Canada), Her (Kosovo), Fire in Cardboard City (New Zealand), Baghead (UK), Two Strangers Who Meet Five Times (UK), and Home Shopper (United States).

Tickets for general admission are $10, and just $5 for BCC students presenting a school I.D.  Visit whalingmuseum.org to purchase tickets.

Overall winners will be announced by the New York City headquarters on October 8.
