DENNIS – A new committee in Dennis tasked with providing recommendations to selectmen regarding beach safety meets for the first time Monday night.

The Beach Safety and Monitoring Committee was formed in response to an incident earlier this summer when several teens were arrested and charged with engaging in sexual activity at Mayflower Beach on July 4th.

The 7-member committee will include a representative from the Beach Committee, the Road Safety Task Force and the Beach Management Advisory Task Force, along with four citizens.

The panel will provide recommendations to the board on solutions to beach safety and rule enforcement issues, along with traffic problems, including parking, congestion, and drop-offs.

Paul Colucci, a year-round resident in Dennis for the last 24 years, was appointed to the committee last week by selectmen.

“I’ve noticed a lot of things changing in the beach areas,” Colucci said. “I’ve spent a lot of time at Chapin Beach in the past – at Bayview Beach, and I’ve seen it all unfold just recently and I could see it coming.”

Wendy Thurmond, who lives on the north side of Dennis was also chosen as one of the four citizens to be appointed to the committee.

“I’ve seen the demise of the north side beaches in recent years so I’d love to be part of the solution as opposed to constantly complaining about the issue,” Thurmond said.

Other citizen members appointed were Paul Chaterlain and Rose Austin.

The incident on Mayflower beach, which saw five teens arrested for the alleged acts, alcohol consumption and ignoring police orders, ignited efforts from town residents to have more rules enforced at public beaches.

The incident brought national media attention to the town, as a video of the event was on social media, showing some onlookers watching in disbelief and others cheering them on.

The new committee will meet at 6 p.m. at Town Hall. The meeting is open to the public.
