BOSTON – The New England Aquarium celebrated World Oceans Day Wednesday in Boston with the launch of a new scientific institute.

The Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life will focus on fisheries conservation, aquaculture solutions, marine mammal health and conservation and habitat health.

“The idea of combining our strengths to create a center of excellence that can focus on solving some of the anthropogenic problems of the oceans was the right thing to do,” said Nigella Hillgarth, the Aquarium’s president and CEO. Hillgarth sought to create the center so its scientific research can shape international conservation policy.

The center will continue the Aquarium’s work to collaborate with fishermen, government agencies, engineers, scientists and other organizations.

The center will look to expand on research of endangered North Atlantic right whales, cold-stunned sea turtles, shell disease in lobsters and emerging endocrinology research in marine species.
