greater-hyannis-chamber-of-commerceHYANNIS – The Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce has created a new event to begin raising funds to address student hunger in Barnstable.

The chamber is sponsoring the self-timed Barnstable Harvest Family Walk-Run 5K on Saturday, November 19 at the Hyannis Village Green at 10 a.m.

The proceeds will be used to fund a food pantry for Barnstable Public School teenagers in need of food resources outside of the school day.

Research indicates that there are many teens who go hungry at home which results in an inability to concentrate, perform or focus.

According to Feeding America, about 7 million American children and teenagers struggle with hunger.

The entry fee for the Harvest Family Run-Walk is $25 and a non-perishable food item. Individuals 18 and under who bring a food item may participate with no fee.

The first 100 registered participants who bring a food item will get an event t-shirt.

The walk-run will start and finish on South Street behind Town Hall.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.
