CHATHAM – Skydiving could return to the Chatham Municipal Airport after a new Federal Aviation Administration report found that the airport was safe for the activity.
The four-page report now paves the way for the town to look for a new skydiving company to operate at the airport. Town officials are also hopeful that the FAA analysis will result in the end of litigation over the matter.
The town is currently engaged in two lawsuits over the matter, one from a group of neighbors opposed to skydiving and one from Skydive Cape Cod, the company that had operated at the airport until 2013. Skydive Cape Cod wants $100,000 from the town for an alleged breach of contract.
The town did not renew the contract in 2013, citing noise and safety concerns.
Town officials have asked both parties to withdraw their suits.
